NETIZENS II - EXHIBITION
Netizens II- post medial freedom opens on December 28 at Sala 1 gallery in Rome. The exibition, in its second edition, is from an idea by Antonella Pisilli and involves transferring art from the Net into a physical space. The six international artists, chosen by Yael Kanarek and Sylvie Parent, have various identities in common: a desire to provoke, a free and unlimited manipulation of net hardware and software, communication strategies. The group GAPPER SNIPPER will coordinate the initiative
Sylvie Parent proposes a work by Yan Breleux entitled HistoireSansFin. Navigating the work, the spectator finds himself in the center of a graphic universe of pre-manufactured, ready-to-use images, picto-grammes that establish a conceptual short-circuit, and erasing the problem of linguistic differences. In HistoireSansFin, the visitor composes the face of our time, allowing the emergence of the fears of our age such as the development of genetic manipulation, ecological inequities, geo-political conflicts, world consumption, the entertainment industry, the new technologies’ evolution. Using the intermediary of various interchangeable frames, the work presents a critical view of the western society and of those capitalistic values that they impose.
Yael Kanarek has chosen five artists that originate from previous historic artists and from other artistic styles. Peter Horvath develops net cinema-montage (remixes music and visual notes). These net films use the browser’s window to break up the normal screen, shaping it into multiple choreographic windows. This technique used as an architectural instrument in order to anticipate the time and the space in which the film is shown. David Crawford creates disquieting metropolitan scenes, but exquisitely alive: uniting haphazardly the various single frames via computer. In SMS13, scenes are united to create a wider narration. When asked about his intention to create a linear story, the artists answers: “Yes, at the beginning, but those the first attempts to reduce things into a singly shot exclusively based on continuity was unsuccessful. At this point, the matter took control of everything: so the only narration that is understood is the on that doesn’t exist” Five Small Videos About Interruption And Disappearing from MTAA group is inspired from the first Bruce Nauman and Vito Acconci’s video performances, full of repetitive gestures and simple actions. In this project, the artists use interactivity to give the spectator a role of direct collaborator in the making of the work.
Portal, is a collaboration between the filmmaker/dancer Evann Siebens and Yael Kanarek that defines a contact between abstract and concrete worlds. The work is contaminated by video-dance tradition, and aesthetically connects post-apocalyptic fantasy to cinema and science fiction games. Portal, using the screen, creates a wall between the main character and the spectator through a strong physical solicitation. Perfect Victoria is the first of the Victoria Defiled series (which consists of three works) by YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES, a group from Seoul. The work mixes texts, voice performance and jazz. Perfect Victoria evokes the poetic tradition that started with the San Francisco beat generation in the ’50 and ’60. But Victoria is a synthetized voice using the 90’s Macintosh operative system. The artists say: “we thought it would be funny to create a sort of “doppelganger” (sic) – not exactly a body, but a software counterfigure as spokesman. Victoria is none other than the same YOUNG HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES group.”

NETIZENS II webprize:
Parallel to the opening of the exhibition, an international net art competition will be launched. This initiative aims to discover new talents in the area of art and the Internet as well as promoting this new form of artistic experimentation. The contest, ending in March 2005, will award first prize in April 2005 to the winner. The prize consists of a one-person exhibition that will be held at the Sala 1 that next year.
